Managing and completing the task
Organizing the groups based on skills
- The group had to divide itself into groups – since there was limited time to achieve all the tasks, they had to establish among themselves who was best suited for each role.
- Everyone had different skills to contribute and the teams were very diverse.
- Due to the nature of the work involved employees from the CEO down to sales staff worked side by side.
Resource allocation and time management
- Once the group was divided into four smaller teams, these then had to work out their own timing, ordering of activities, and division of labour to achieve their assigned goals in the given time.
- The teams had to be cohesive, and rely on each other as often task were sequential.
- Supplies and tools were also carefully allocated, so the teams also had to manage their own “supply chain”, to ensure they did not run out of resources or time.
Outcome
The teams were all very enthusiastic the whole time they were working, but there was a lot of back slapping and a huge sense of achievement after completing their tasks. As well as the usual bonding over a glass of wine at the bar, they also got to share experiences whilst painting, digging, sawing etc. For many, these were tasks that took them out of their comfort zone and made them ask for help, learn and challenge themselves. For others these tasks provided great
opportunities to teach others and take on leadership within the teams.Another important element was the interaction with the local community and the children at the school, where football and ad hoc games were played with the kids. These shared memories will help them all bond well beyond the end of the vacation.
